The Cubs? Is their curse over?
Well, the Cubs made a huge step in improving their team for the future today. They signed Alfonso Soriano to an 8-year deal worth a $136 million. That is just a little chunk of change. It is actually the highest contract ever given by the Cubs. So, either this is going to be a great signing....or it will just add onto the curse of the goat. Here is what Soriano had to say when he learned that his contract was the fifth highest contract ever in baseball, "Like I said before, I'm not even thinking about the money." Yeah, we believe you Al.
The Cubs re-signed 3B Aramis Ramirez earlier to a 5-year, $75 million deal. It was the club's highest contract ever until Soriano's deal came through. But, it's not about the money. And why would it when you are making $16 million a year?
Both of those signings were big, but I don't think anyone would argue with me that the key signing this offseason for the Cubs is the re-signing of reserve catcher Henry Blanco; who is making a meager $2.625 million a year.

I have been posting about things I hate recently so I figure I should post about things that I like. The only reason I am doing this is because The Office comes on tonight and that makes me happy.
I like sports. A lot of things about sports frustrate me but I still like them. It is all I did and cared about growing up and things aren't that much different now. I no longer have the ability to play sports but I love to watch them, talk about them, blog about them and do just about anything else that has to do with them.
I like Alabama football. My dad is a Bama fan so I have been since birth. Things have been hard over the last few years but I still like nothing better on a Saturday afternoon than cheering for the Crimson Tide. Nothing puts that feeling in my stomach like the words, "The 3rd Saturday in October" or "The Iron Bowl."
I like the Titans. Again things have been down recently but I still spend 3 hours every Sunday, except this one because it is the bye week, watching the Titans. I like that the Titans drafted VY. I think he is going to be a star in the NFL and, if nothing else, he is a lot of fun to watch.
I like Music City Miracles. I am not sure how many people read it besides my dad and DonFrancisco but I still enjoy "blogging" about the team everyday. It makes me feel that I have a little extra stake in the team.
I like the Cubs. Based on my choices of sports teams you can see why I am so angry. Baseball is my favorite of all the sports and I will support the Cubs in a year like 2003 or a year like 2006. I will sit down and watch every minute of every game when I get the chance and cheer for them even if they are 20.5 games behind the Cardinals, whom I hate. (sorry still a little angry)
Tonight I love the Mets. I am happy every year when the Cardinals are at home and I know that I am not going to have to listen to a couple of annoying Cardinal fans that I play softball with brag about how good the Cards are. LET'S GO METS!!
Page2 on ESPN.com can often be annoying or is usually only good in small doses. However, I LOVE UNIWATCH. It is always interesting. This weeks is even better. I don't want to ruin it all, but it has a HUGE Bill Buckner story, and it mentions Lipscomb University.
I am filled with a lot of hate in my life if you cannot tell. I told you last week about how and why I hate the Yankees. I actually hate the Ravens more than I hate the Yankees. It has been tough for me this year because Steve McNair is one of my all time favorite players and now he plays for the Ravens. I have to just be neutral this year because I can't bring myself to cheer for the Ravens.
One thing that blows my mind is the fact that guys like Derrick Mason, Samari Rolle and Steve McNair can go play for the Ravens. There are 2 teams the Titans hate; the Colts and the Ravens. Back in the day where McNair, Mason, and Rolle were in their prime as the faces of the Titans the Ravens were no doubt the team they hated the most. Brian Billick cried because when the Ravens played at the Coliseum the Titans played clips of crap Billick had talked about the Titans. I guess the allmighty dollar speaks more than what is said on and off the field.
The reason I bring this up today is because Billick fired offensive coordinator Jim Fassel. Billick will take over the play calling duties. Billick is an ego maniac who is and always has been overrated. Billick came to the Ravens from the Vikings and was billed an "offensive genious." Since he has been with the Ravens he has been praised for dialing down his offense to let the defense win games. That is just stupid. Don't you think if he was an "offensive genious" the Ravens would be an unstoppable powerhouse? Think about it. Great defenses and an offense run by a genious could add up to nothing but Super Bowl titles on top of Super Bowl titles. I know he won one but that was just because of his defense and his playoff MVP Al Del Greco. Billick has been through 68 QB's since he has been in Baltimore and none of them have been any good. Billick made this move today in hopes that it will save his job. If Art Modell had half a clue he would have already fired Billick. The excuse has been the bad QB's. My questions is; Why can't Billick mold QB's? Any suggestions?
Someone posted annonymously yesterday that the Cubs are trash. Be a man and put your name on it.
When will the love affair with Tim Tebow stop? Don't get me wrong, I think he is going to be a stud. The thing is he hasn't done anything yet. Vern Lundquist, while announcing the Ole Miss vs. Alabama game, mentioned Tim Tebow twice. Maybe I missed something but I think he plays for Florida. The ESPN announcers Saturday night referred to him as "The Phenom Tim Tebow." I don't know if anyone else has noticed this or not but THEY DON'T EVEN LET TEBOW THROW THE BALL!! Let's see him complete some passes before we annoint him the second coming of Vince Young. (ha ha)
Well my Cubbies went out and decided to prove why they haven't won a World Series in 1,022 years. They hired Lou Pinella. Isn't he just Dusty Baker with a different color skin? Let's think about it; he hates young players, he hires all his boys as assistant coaches and he abuses pitchers. This is bad news for Marcia. Prior. I guess we will have to sit through another year of her injuries. At least Dusty's players liked him. This will end badly and will probably make Fatty Hendry lose his job. I guess it isn't all bad.
What about that FIU vs. Miami brawl? I was shocked to see Miami in a brawl. The most disturbing thing about it is, to this point the only suspensions are one game. Some kid came running in hitting people with his helmet and he only gets one game?!? That is just as bad as what Fat Albert did and maybe even worse. R.I.P Larry Coker.
I know that it doesn't really matter right at this point, but the initial BCS standings are terrible. This is usually the case every single year that the BCS has been in place, but I am getting tired of it.
Does anything not look right to you? Here's a hint:
So, you do agree. UT should NOT be ranked behind Cal, the team that UT beat 35-17 the first week of the season. And that score looks a lot better than the game was. UT was up 35-0. How can you have a team that got WHOOPED ahead of the team that WHOOPED it? You can throw out all of the talk about strength of schedule and all of that other crap, because it is just crap. Sorry for my foul language.
Until we get a playoff system for NCAA football, it will always be a flawed system. I think we should just devote this website to petition for the NCAA to begin a playoff for D-1 football. Who's with me?
Antrel Rolle was fined $12,500 for a play where he tackled Larry Johnson by his facemask. It is the second time this year he has been fined for an on the field incident. He was fined for a "horse-collar" tackle earlier this year. More on that in a minute. Man I am so glad we don't have that guy on our team. Think about the distractions he has been causing making plays on the field. Floyd Reese was right. Adam Jones has done nothing but be the model citizen, has 6 INTs and leads the league in punt return yards. (please note that everything in that last sentence is entirely false)
I have a few things to say about the so called "horse-collar rule." That is the biggest bunch of crap rule that has ever been introduced. How are you supposed to tackle a guy from behind? Try to wrap his legs up and get kicked in the face or try to tackle him high and just get shaken off. It isn't bad enough that it is a penalty but then they fine guys for it. The NFL is stupid. I think they should shut the league dow. (I don't mean that either)
Dear Mr Hendry,
Please hire Joe Girardi and not Lou Pinella. (unless you think hiring Pinella would help you bring A-Rod to Chicago)
